PLENARY SESSION I
‘Pre and post-harvest losses and degradation of food crops: extent, causes and control‘
Prof. Richard Strange.
Prof. Richard Strange is a Plant Pathologist and is currently Honorary Professor of Biology, University College London and Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, Birkbeck College, University of London. He has published over 100 scientific papers and two books: Plant Disease Control, Towards Environmentally Acceptable Methods (1992) and Introduction to Plant Pathology (2003). His research interests are plant diseases, their impact on the lives of people and the interaction of plant pathogens with their hosts. One of his main occupations is as Editor-in-Chief of the new journal, “Food Security: the Science, Sociology and Economics of Food Production and Access to Food”, which began publication in the spring of 2009.

‘Potential impacts of climate changes on plant disease management‘.
Dr. Juan A. Navas-Cortés.
Dr. Navas-Cortés, PhD. in Biology, University of Córdoba, Spain Current Position: Research Scientist Dept. Crop Protection, Institute for Sustainable Agriculture (IAS) Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) Research interests: I) Development of quantitative models to facilitate prediction of plant diseases and design efficient control strategies; II) Spatio-temporal dynamics of plant disease epidemics; III) Impacts of climatic change on the geographical distribution of plant pathogens, their life cycles and the epidemics they cause; and IV) Detection, monitoring and quantification of plant disease epidemics by remote sensing. We are interested in diseases caused by soilborne fungi of Mediterranean crops.

Dr. M. G Shepherd.
Dr. Shepherd is the Managing Director of Biocell Corporation Limited, a biotechnology company that develops, manufactures and distributes human and animal health products. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Chairman of Pharmazen Ltd, and a director of Blis Technologies Ltd. Dr. Shepherd was a member of the Biochemistry Department, University of Otago, as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (1969-1981), and was the Foundation Professor in Experimental Oral Biology (1981-1992). His research interests have included the biology of the human pathogenic yeast, Candida albicans. It was for his research into C.albicans that Dr. Shepherd was awarded in 1985 the Belgium Royal Academy of Medicine Denis Thienpont prize in Mycology. He has published more than 100 original articles in international journals and contributed to a number of books and reviews. Dr. Shepherd was a founder and from 1990 until 2005 Executive Director of Zenith Technology Corporation Ltd. Previous positions include: Chairman of Otago Polytechnic, Member of the NZ Government Biotechnology Taskforce, The National Research Advisory Council, Chairman Dunedin Business Incubater, Upstart.
